Dear Thoroughbred Friends,

With one month to go, After the Finish Line is finalizing details for their August 5th fundraiser in Del Mar, CA. “A Tribute to the Majesty of the Thoroughbreds” will raise funds for rescued Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. ATFL provides funding to qualified rescue organizations in California and across the United States who save, care for and rehabilitate these talented horses to excel in a second career.

After the Finish Line welcomes Katherine Brooks as our guest speaker. Katherine is the Director/Writer of the movie The Boys Club. This autobiography is about the most successful female jockey of all time, Julie Krone. It will be exciting to listen to Katherine speak about the movie’s storyline and her motivation to make The Boys Club. Both ladies care about the welfare of our Thoroughbred friends.

The master of ceremonies at our fundraiser is Michael Villani. Mr. Villani is an actor/voice over artist who has co-starred in numerous movies and television series. He is also a venue announcer for the Olympics on NBC.

Our auctioneer, Hall of Fame Trainer Jack Van Berg, is one of the most successful trainers in racing history. Van Berg is second in all time victories with 6,394. He is most noted as the trainer of 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Alysheba.

After the Finish Line is proud of their partnership with MVP Champions. They are producing racing jerseys for prominent jockeys, racehorses and trainers. This philanthropic company adopted the slogan, “Thoroughbreds We Care”. This brochure shows their upcoming jersey signings and sales at the California racetracks. Expect more jerseys to be added to the Del Mar race schedule.

ATFL also partnered with the Thoroughbred Celebration Horse Shows in Virginia. They donated the proceeds of their silent auction to us. These horse shows are only open to Thoroughbreds who once raced or trained for racing career. The talented horses showed they can transition and excel in a second career after racing. Shown here is Well Spent who raced as All Game as a 4 year old and was unsuccessful on the track in her 6 starts. Yet, she won the After the Finish Line Hunter Stakes at the show.

After the Finish Line awarded $3,200 in emergency funds to rescue organizations this month. United Pegasus cares for 57 Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. Combined, they earned $9 million in purses. Cardmania and Music Merci each won over $1.5 million. These horses raced on the California tracks with Pincay, Delahoussaye and Solis aboard. ATFL provided funding to pay for their hay expense.

ATFL also awarded emergency funds to F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for Broom Rider, a 16-year-old mare who raced at Tampa Bay, Charles Town, Hialeah Park and Calder. Of 16 starts she ran in the money 9 times earning $27k. After racing she became a broodmare. Broom Rider was rescued from a muddy, unmucked enclosure with large open sores on 3 legs. She has a serious skin disease called Florida horse leech. Broom requires multiple surgeries. This kind and gentle horse is part of the therapy program at the rescue. ATFL will provide funds to pay for the surgeries Broom needs to get better.
